Po odškrtnutí Me 309 v roce 1944 byl zastaven také vývoj Me 509. Přibližně ve stejnou dobu byl zahájen vývoj motoru stejné koncepce v Japonsku ve společnosti Yokosuka.

This project was developed in response to a 1941 RLM requirement for a new Zerstörer to replace the Bf 110 in a short time and a minimum cost. Messerschmitt's response was the Me 609, which would use the Me 309 project to form the basis of the new fighter. Very unusual was four-wheel arrangement. The Messerschmitt Me 509 was a single-seat fighter aircraft designed by Messerschmitt AG during World War II. It was based on the Me 309, from which it took over the tailplanes and landing gear. Unlike the 309, however, the engine was not located in the nose, but in the central part of the fuselage, close to the center of gravity.
