In July 1943, three prototypes of the Ki-87 were ordered, but only one was built. It first flew in April 1945 and flew only five more times before the end of the war. After the war, it was captured by the US Army. The next phase of the project was the Ki-87 II version with a 3,000 hp Nakajima Ha-46-11 engine and a turbofan under the fuselage.
