The Me 309 concept was developed by Messerschmitt in mid-1940 as an evolution of the Bf 109 and inspired by the P-39 Airacobra. The new aircraft was to be equipped with a pressurized cabin, a retractable radiator and a nose landing gear. The engines with a planned output of 1700 to 1800hp DB 603 and Jumo 213 were to be used. In addition, the Me 309 was to have a heavy armament of several barreled guns without the need to be mounted in aerodynamically disadvantageous containers under the wing.
