Firma Airspeed Limited byla založena v anglickém Yorku už v roce 1931. Od výroby kluzáku AS.1 Tern a řady vícemotorových letounů se konstruktéři dostali až ke stroji s označením AS6 Envoy. Uvedený typ letounu prakticky vycházel z předchozího typu Airspeed AS5 Courier. V té době ovšem firma již sídlila v Portsmouthu.

AS6 Envoy poprvé vzlétl v červnu 1934. Konstrukce letounu byla celodřevěná. Plátěný potah byl na exponovaných místech zesílen leteckou překližkou. Rozpětí těchto strojů bylo 15,94 metrů a délka trupu 10,53 metrů. Při max. vzletové hmotnosti 2860kg a na svou dobu vysoké cestovní rychlosti 265km/h ( max. 300 km/h ) byl dolet se šesti cestujícími až 1020 km.
