The prototypes were powered by the excellent DB 600 inline engines, but these were in short supply and so were replaced in series production by BMW VI inline engines. These aircraft were later deployed in Spain. However, inline engines began to be fitted to fighters (Bf 109), which increased the demand for these engines and so the Do 17 M-1 and P-1 versions received radial engines. The M-1 version was powered by the 662 kW Bramo 323A-1 engine. The P-1 reconnaissance version was fitted with the weaker but more economical 636 kW BMW 132N engines, which gave the aircraft greater range.
