In 1933, the RLM issued a request for a new fighter to replace the Heinkel He 51 and Arado Ar 68 biplanes. Proposals were submitted by Arado, Focke-Wulf, Heinkel and Messerschmitt. The Heinkel He 112 prototype was tested in competition with three other aircraft at Travemünde in October 1935, and ten aircraft were ordered. Powered by a Rolls-Royce KestrelV engine, with a power output of 518 kW, the prototype was followed by two other aircraft with a reduced wingspan and a weaker Junkers Jumo 210C engine with a power output of 447 kW. A fourth prototype, with a new, elliptical wing, was operationally tested by the Condor Legion in Spain in 1936, and was exhibited at the Zurich Air Show in 1937. It was flown by civilian pilots in Spain and was rated better than the Bf 109C.
