    Firma Airspeed Limited byla založena v anglickém Yorku už v roce 1931. Od výroby kluzáku AS.1 Tern a řady vícemotorových letounů se konstruktéři dostali až ke stroji s označením AS6 Envoy. Uvedený typ letounu prakticky vycházel z předchozího typu Airspeed AS5 Courier. V té době ovšem firma již sídlila v Portsmouthu.

By the outbreak of World War II, approximately 120 aircraft had been delivered to the Armée de l'Air, but most were not sufficiently equipped to be considered operational. The improved MB.155 had a longer range. It was ordered into production in 1940, but only ten aircraft had been completed by the fall of France.

    After the success of the Avie Ba.122, other variants were developed. B-222.1 was flown in August 1937. The machine was powered by a nine-cylinder Rk-17 engine which was covered with a NACA aerodynamic cowling, and the wheels were also cowled.
